NRP® Neonatal Resuscitation Program
Two parts, one certification: a self-paced online curriculum, then a hands-on instructor-led skills session with simulation and debriefing. Built for anyone involved in neonatal resuscitation in the delivery setting.
Read this before you book
The NRP now requires all participants to complete Lessons 1–11. Once your online work is complete, bring your certificate to your skills session. You have 90 days from finishing Part 1 to complete Part 2. A textbook is required for the course — if you do not have one, you will be asked to purchase one during checkout or on the day of class.
How the two parts work
Self-paced modules & eSim cases
3–8 hours, depending on your experience. Complete Lessons 1–11.
Go to www.healthstream.com/hlc/aap and create an account. The online portion is $35, paid directly to HealthStream — that fee is not part of the class fee here.
Instructor-led skills session
2.5 hours, in the classroom with me.
Bring your Part 1 completion certificate. Skills are practised and signed off; simulation and debriefing are a required part of the course, and your performance during simulation is not used as a pass/fail criterion.
Who NRP is designed for
The Neonatal Resuscitation Program is designed for health care professionals involved in any aspect of neonatal resuscitation in the hospital delivery setting. This includes physicians, nurses, advanced practice nurses (nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives), physician assistants (who function as part of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit [NICU] team), respiratory therapists, and other health care professionals who provide direct care during neonatal resuscitation.
The principles of NRP may also be used when newborns require resuscitation in the hospital but outside of the delivery room, such as in the mother-baby unit, Emergency Department, or hospital-affiliated birth center.
Recommended for healthcare professionals involved in the delivery and care of newborns, including pediatricians, RTs and RNs.

- How to identify and use neonatal resuscitation equipment.
- Initial assessments of newborns.
- Positive pressure ventilation.
- Neonatal CPR.
- Medication dosing and administration.
- Integration of all neonate skills (neonatal megacode).
Provider levels & required skills
Required course components for the instructor-led Essentials and Advanced Provider courses are as follows. The online learning assessment is required for both.
Essentials provider
Demonstration of the learner's ability to perform the skills in the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation, 9th edition, Lessons 2 through 4, and lead a resuscitation team through evaluative scenarios of the instructor's choice to ensure the learner's understanding of the NRP Algorithm sequence and use of NRP Key Behavioral Skills.
This includes preparation for resuscitation, initial steps of newborn care, oxygen management, assisted ventilation, laryngeal mask insertion, and orogastric tube insertion. The institution may determine who has clinical responsibility for providing continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in the delivery room.
Advanced provider
Demonstration of the learner's ability to perform the skills in the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation, 9th edition, Lessons 2 through 7, and lead a resuscitation team through evaluative scenarios of the instructor's choice to ensure the learner's understanding of the NRP Algorithm sequence and use of NRP Key Behavioral Skills.
Skills include the skills in Lessons 2 through 4 as listed above for the Essentials learner, plus endotracheal intubation (perform or assist), chest compressions, emergency umbilical venous catheter placement (perform or assist), and medication administration.
Simulation and debriefing
This is a required instructor-led Provider Course component used to build teamwork and effective communication. The learner's performance during simulation is not used as criteria for passing the course.
Renewal
The AAP requires renewal every two years by the last day of the month in which the instructor-led Provider Course was completed. I'll flag your renewal month when your card is issued.
Cancellations
Cancelling inside 72 hours of the class means the fee you have paid is forfeited. Outside that window you may move to the same class on a different date, and that transferred booking becomes non-refundable. See the cancellation and refund policy.
Book the skills session, do the online part first
Reserve your seat in Part 2 here. Then create your HealthStream account, work through Lessons 1–11, and bring the completion certificate with you. Your seat is held either way — but you can't be signed off without Part 1.
